Objective

Economic conceptions with utilitarian visions of nature have caused serious imbalances in the state of the ocean, contributing to the degradation of ecosystems and the loss of biodiversity. Responsibility for restoring the ecological and social balance has been carried out under the guidance of sustainability, falling to political decision-makers and the scientific community, who convene each other in this demand.

The objective of this project is to identify the main political and scientific actors involved in the governance of the Azorean sea, how they have communicated with each other in the face of the growing environmental challenge and how the sharing of knowledge between both has contributed to transforming the way Azorean society relates with the ocean. Investigating agency and decision-making practices, whether they are successful or not, is a reflective process that determines the ongoing process of social and ecological transformation.
