SU-DG-IWG

Support Unit for the Deep Geothermal Implementation Working Group

Aim of the project

The objective of this project is to facilitate the execution of the Geothermal Energy Implementation Plan by gathering current data, tools and procedures and to ensure that strategic decisions based on evidence to advance geothermal energy. This work aims to ensure that geothermal energy can play its role in Europe’s future energy supply in a sustainable way.

The Support Unit will identify areas where joint research will accelerate progress across the sector. The consortium aims to bring together stakeholders representing geothermal technologies from industry, research and the public sector across Europe.
Its mission is to provide a framework to be used in defining and implementing an innovation strategy to increase the use of geothermal energy and to promote the growth and market acceptance of relevant European industries and research organizations

Impact of the Azores Region

The IWG project internationally highlights the Autonomous Region of the Azores in the geothermal sector. The Azores, due to their geostructural position, that is, located in a junction of triple tectonic plate, have a high geothermal potential that allows betting on the valorization of this endogenous resource for the production of renewable energy, thus promoting a low carbon economy either by incorporating innovation processes and international good practices.
In this way, the IWG project promotes the region in the geothermal sector and the opportunity to deepen institutional collaboration ties between the Regional Government and key partners in the geothermal sector, both in the EU and internationally.
