Objectivo

The project aims to explore the cultural and sonic lives of people and the environment in São Miguel, the largest island in the Portuguese autonomous region of the Açores. It focuses on documenting and analyzing the island’s unique soundscape—including music, voices, and environmental sounds—as a means of understanding identity formation, cultural connectivity, and expressions of “Açorean Portugueseness.” Through ethnographic methods such as interviews, observation, and participation in musical gatherings and festivals, the project seeks to reveal how musical expression reflects social, religious, and gendered dimensions of life, while highlighting the distinct cultural identity of the Açores within the broader Portuguese context.
