Objectivo
This project aims to comprehensively investigate how DNA methylation influences the clinical and pathological expression of Machado-Joseph disease by analysing methylation patterns in frozen post-mortem brain samples from patients and healthy controls. The project aims to identify disease-specific epigenetic alterations that contribute to the development and progression of this currently untreatable neurodegenerative disorder, particularly prevalent in the Azores, and to generate molecular insights that may inform the discovery of novel therapeutic targets and future treatment strategies.
