GEOTHERMICA

ERA NET Cofund Geothermal

Aim of the project

GEOTHERMICA’s objective is to combine the financial resources and know-how of 16 geothermal energy research and innovation programme owners and managers from 13 countries, to launch joint actions that demonstrate and validate novel concepts of geothermal energy utilization within the energy system and that identify paths to commerciality. Joint actions comprise joint calls and coordination activities, which will strengthen Europe’s geothermal energy sector by building a tightly interconnected and well-coordinated network of European funding agents.

FRCT joined the 1st Joint Call – 2017 and financed one regional team from the University of the Azores in this project:

HEATSTORE (High Temperature Underground  Thermal Energy Storage) – aims to study Underground Thermal Energy Storage and to provide an impulse for the energy transition and for reducing the carbon footprint by developing tools and technologies for underground heat storage. Responsible regional researcher, Maria de Fátima Viveiros, is member of the Institute for Research in Volcanology and Risk Assessment.

Impact on the Azores Region

In the frame of this project, FRCT contributed with 100 000€ to the first call for transnational projects. The financial support can only be used by R&D and non-for-private entities based in the Autonomous Region of the Azores and part of the Azores Scientific and Technological System.
