Objectives

This project aims to be the first systematic and comparative study characterising the materials and techniques used in the production of sculpture in the Azores during the Early Modern period. Its main objectives are to contribute to the knowledge and preservation of polychrome sculpture in the Azores and to be guided by the following research questions:

  1. What materials and techniques were used in the production of these sculptures?
  2. How do they fit into a broader cultural context?
  3. How can their preservation be supported through new technologies?

Results & Impact

As part of this project, and through a collective and collaborative effort with the museums and churches of the region, it was possible to carry out campaigns for the collection of micro-samples from a representative set of locally produced sculptures dating from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. The collected samples are currently being analysed in the laboratory, and the results will provide insights into the materials and techniques used in the original polychromy of each sculpture. These findings will inform churches and museums about the technical and material history of their pieces, which, alongside a study on material preservation and improved conservation methodologies for these works in the region, will contribute to a better understanding and preservation of these collections.
